§ 4.4. Schools

Latest version.
  • The City of Greenwood is served by the Greenwood School District.

The Greenwood School District includes the Greenwood High School/Middle School and Greenwood Elementary School. The Greenwood High School is located on a 34-acre site on the city's west side. The Greenwood Elementary School is on a 30-acre site located on the city's east side. Total district enrollment in the 2000-2001 school year was 564 students. Enrollment within the school district has decreased by 5.7% since 1996.

The Greenwood School District has been dealing with significant financial issues for the last several years, which is anticipated to continue due to the district's decreases in enrollment and the budget issues facing the State of Wisconsin. The district has been considering a number of options for reducing expenditures and increasing revenue such as consolidation, cutting programs, sharing staff, cooperative extracurricular programs, etc. One option that was considered by the district in 2004 was to investigate opportunities for working with the Amish community in the area. An affiliation with the Amish may allow the district to increase its allocation of state funding.

Recently, discussions have become very active with the School District of Loyal which has experienced declining enrollments and is also facing financial difficulties. The concept of consolidation between the two school districts is not beyond the realm of possibilities over the planning period. In April, 2005 the Greenwood and Loyal School Boards met to review a list of potential consolidation issues. Based on review of the list, both boards will consider the need to fund a formal consolidation study. Also in April, Greenwood School District residents approved the district to exceed its revenue cap by $500,000.00 thru 2010. No final decisions have been made on consolidation or other available options. Ongoing cooperation and consolidation discussions continue with the Neillsville, Granton, Loyal, and Owen-Withee school districts.
